Police in Istanbul found two unexploded bombs on Wednesday; one located under the HaliÃ§ (Golden Horn) Bridge and the other near a bus stop in Ikitelli, BÃ¼yÃ¼kÃ§ekmece.
Istanbul Police Chief Celalettin Cerrah said an investigation into the matter was ongoing, adding that they were awaiting results from their forensic science laboratory to find out the nature of the bomb’s construction. He said the two bombs were very similar.
He added that police had found the bomb under the bridge after a tip-off, but refused to comment on precisely how much damage it could have caused before the police received the laboratory results.
He also said they did not know who or which group could have planted the bombs, adding that the bomb would not have caused any structural damage to the bridge.
According to the Anatolia news agency, an unnamed top police official from Istanbul said the bomb under the bridge was a plastic explosive weighing around 20 kilograms and was deactivated by bomb disposal experts. It was reported that it was a time bomb
In Ikitelli, passers-by alerted the police in Ikitelli about a suspicious package near the local bus station. Police secured the area, before bomb disposal squads defused it.
