If the recent horror in Madrid is the work of Al Qaeda, then the “western” world has two options. It can meet the challenge head on now, as the USA has; or it can turn upon itself and become a fractured, vulnerable mess.
In my humble opinion, it’s ironic. The citizens of Spain have a decision to make for the world as Americans know it. The citizens of Spain can choose the example of courage and strength by Americans, and increase their efforts in the fight against Islamic Terrorism; or they can put their tails between their legs, and blame Americans, and their Government leadership for terrorism.
Whichever way Spain goes, so will the world.
Will the Citizens of Spain take the fight to the terrorists, as America has, or will they simply cower?
Unfortunately, I believe Europe will cower. I believe America will be blamed for this act of cowardice and murder in Madrid. I serioulsy question the intestinal fortitude of most of our European cousins.
One I do not doubt is Tony Blair; in his speech to the United States Congress on 18 July 2003:
“The purpose of terrorism is not the single act of wanton destruction. It is the reaction it seeks to provoke: economic collapse; the backlash; the hatred; the division; the elimination of tolerance; until societies cease to reconcile their differences but become defined by them. Kashmir, the Middle East, Chechyna, Indonesia, Africa. Barely a continent or nation is unscathed.”
Tony know’s our enemy isn’t stupid. Our enemy is calculating his chess board 10 moves ahead. He cannot win conventionally. He must be patient and he must turn ally against ally, divide, and ultimately conquer.
As Spain goes, so will the world. If Spain turns inward, and isolationist, essentially turning it’s back upon the USA’s efforts in the War on Terrorism, including Iraq, – then that is the example all other nations will follow. Our closest allies for the last 50+ years, strategically and economically, will turn upon us and seek to undermine our strategic and economic interests throughout the world.
Think about it.
