Italian intelligence sources have named March 20 and June 12-13 as possible dates for terrorist attacks in Italy, ANSA news agency said Wednesday.
There are no “specific indications” of any attacks planned for these dates, but each is considered a potential high risk, the sources told ANSA.
March 20 is the anniversary of the U.S.-led attack on Iraq. Like Jose-Maria Aznar, the Spanish prime minister ousted in Sunday’s election, Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi has been a strong ally of the United States in spite of vigorous anti-war sentiment at home, and Italy has more than 2,000 troops deployed in Iraq.
June 12-13 are the scheduled dates for the European Parliamentary elections.
An alleged al-Qaida video claiming responsibility for Thursday’s multiple train explosions in Madrid also warned Italy could be a target.
The sources said churches would be the most vulnerable terrorist objectives, particularly during next month’s Easter celebrations.
