Israel will hit back militarily if Baghdad attacks it during any US-led strike on Iraq, Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz said Saturday.
“Israel will react to a possible Iraqi attack with offensive actions,” Mofaz said, speaking on Israel’s private Channel Two.
The minister acknowledged however that the likelihood of an Iraqi attack was minimal.
“As far as military intelligence knows, there are currently no missile launchers in western Iraq” that could threaten Israel, “but we are watching the situation closely,” he said.
“The (US-led) offensive in Iraq is inevitable and it seems it will take place soon,” he added, without elaborating.
During the 1991 Gulf War Iraq fired 39 Scuds at Israel killing two people, injuring hundreds, and causing heavy damage, notably around the capital Tel Aviv.
