The Financial Times – The US embassy in Bucharest has confirmed Iraqi operatives were targeting US government facilities in the city for attack before the invasion of Iraq.
The Romanian Intelligence Service (SRI) said last week it had uncovered a plan to attack US and Israeli targets in the event of an invasion of Iraq. It had been aware of plans to attack the targets since 2002 and had alerted foreign intelligence agencies.
The SRI said the attacks were to be carried out using AG 7 grenade launchers, to be brought into the country by a diplomat at the Iraqi embassy. The attacks were due to be sanctioned by officials in Baghdad in the event of an invasion. The Romanians said in March they expelled or barred from entering the country 10 diplomats and 31 civilians to prevent the attacks.
