The head of the radical Islamist Hamas’ military wing claimed that the group had an “army” of suicide bombers at its disposal, he was quoted as saying Tuesday.
“There is an army of candidates to martyrdom. We have several recruits for each potential Zionist target,” said Mohammed Deif on the Ezzedine Al-Qassam Brigades’ website (www.ezzedeen.net).
“The Brigades’ engineers and technicians work night and day to build up our capacity to hit the enemy,” he added.
Deif said resorting to suicide bombers had allowed Palestinian armed groups to increase their striking power against Israel despite its towering military superiority.
“All agree that martyr bombers have become a deterrent weapon. The explosive charge they carry is insignificant when compared to an Israeli tank shell or to the power of an Apache helicopter but they (the bombers) are as efficient as a tank or a warplane,” he said.
Deif, one Israel’s most wanted man, is accused of having masterminded several suicide blasts that left dozens of people dead.
He has escaped several assassination attempts by the army.
